The big transition 2023
Fluorescent lamps and compact fluorescent tubes will be banned in the EU/EEA as of 1 September
2023 because they contain mercury and have high energy consumption. This is described in the
Ecodesign Directive 2019/2020/EU and the RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU.
Fluorescent lamps that are on the market can be sold while stocks last. In some cases, it will be
possible to switch to LED fluorescent lamps or convert the luminaires, but this will leave you with
a product without warranty and the person performing the work is responsible for ensuring that
the new solution meets all requirements. Here, it is better to replace with a luminaire designed for
today’s technology and the best energy efficiency.
With current electricity prices, replacing T5/T8 with an LED solution pays for itself in a very short
time. Overall, this would be a good investment in terms of costs, energy and the environment.
